Life Sciences Practice Overview

The Life Sciences industry is undergoing spectacular changes, impacted by patent expirations, patient empowerment, increased regulatory scrutiny, and stringent cost containment. While the industry continues to lower costs and consolidate, it is seeking new growth opportunities through innovation, diversification, and expansion in emerging markets. Capgemini Invent’s Life Sciences practice has partnered with leading pharmaceutical and biotechnology clients to help define and deliver their future state for more than 25 years. The dedicated team guides clients from strategy to execution across the value chain. The practice’s core focus areas are commercial and digital transformation, manufacturing, supply chain, innovation, business agility, patient services, and patient experience.

As a Data Science Director within the Capgemini Invent team, you will support our business in leading the sales and delivery of strategic and tactical data-driven analyses to generate insights, trends, conclusions, and actionable recommendations by leveraging various data sources such as longitudinal clinical and claims, healthcare provider interaction, social determinants of health (SDOH), wearables/IoT data, weather, and other exogenous data sources. You will provide expert advice and guidance to businesses and organizations on how to use data and analytics to solve complex operational/business problems, remove product/service bottlenecks, transform supply chain/manufacturing processes, improve decision-making, and generate growth and innovation. You will do this by combining a deep subject matter expertise and inquisitive mindset to tackle complex topics at the intersection of operations, data systems/engineering intelligence, and data science.

The role and responsibilities for a Data Science Director include Business Development, Project Delivery, and Practice Building for Data Science capability focus.

Product Management-based delivery and capability-building:

  • Lead product management on behalf of clients:
    • Lead Data Strategy & Data Science engagements with large Life Sciences organizations.
    • Invent and design new/improved digital customer experiences and develop digital customer engagement strategies. Lead the design of new digital capabilities, business processes, organizational designs, governance structures and measurement programs required to achieve growth, implement future state experiences and digital customer engagement strategies.
    • Simplify and bring clarity to complicated situations, models and issues to create structured actions.
    • Test insights and recommendations with senior management.
    • Provide strategic oversight for or run projects from start-to-finish and drive blended teams of management consultants, experience designers, data analysts and technology implementation specialists to deliver according to plan (scope, quality and time).
    • Mentor and coach others to deliver quality results and promote others' professional development.
  • Participate in capability-building for Data-Driven Transformation and Life Sciences practice:
    • Proactively participate in North American recruitment, training and community-building.
    • Be a visible member of the global community of practice.
  • Provide leadership, mentoring and coaching for the team

Business Development:

  • Proactively leverage personal business relationships to ignite conversations with new clients or buying centers
  • Identify sources of new business opportunities, assemble appropriate internal resources for the pursuit, and drive sales and business growth
  • Build network within the Capgemini group and educate other Business Units around the Data-Driven Transformation/Life Sciences practice offerings in order to support existing account expansion
  • Drive proactive client proposals and RFP responses from initial brief to final presentations
  • Nurture and expand existing account relationships

Project Leadership and Delivery:

  • Demonstrate strong consulting and advisory skills including analytical capabilities, ability to synthesize content and translate it into recommendations, results, financial models
  • Drive blended teams of management consultants, experience designers, technology, data strategists, and implementation specialists to deliver according to plan (scope, quality and time).
  • Contribute to the design of new digital capabilities, business processes, organizational designs, governance structures and measurement programs to meet client needs
  • Simplify and bring clarity to challenging situations and data to create structured actions.

Project Management and Delivery

  • Accountable for ensuring successful project delivery in concert with the delivery executive, including:
    • Driving completion of services and results, meeting or exceeding clients’ expectations of speed, quality, and budget
    • Completing status reports
    • Maintaining financials
    • Leading client communication
    • Onboarding and evaluating team resources
  • Exhibits a strong ability to handle multiple demands with a sense of urgency, drive, and energy
  • Collaborate with team and clients to define long-term vision, goals, and strategies
  • Demonstrate strong consulting and advisory skills including analytical capabilities, ability to synthesize content and translate it into sound recommendations and results
  • Lead or be a team member of Life Science transformation projects with large client organizations
  • Accountable for ensuring the accurate reporting of personal and project team productivity (e.g., utilization rates)
  • Simplify and bring clarity to complicated situations, models, and issues to create structured actions and recommendations
  • Test and present insights and recommendations to clients
  • Demonstrate ability to drive blended teams of management consultants, junior team members, technology specialists, data analysts, and implementation specialists to deliver according to plan (schedule, scope, quality, and budget)
  • Mentor and coach others to deliver quality results and promote others' professional development
  • Show strength in using appropriate tools for the analysis of data (e.g., Excel, SAS) and the communication of insights and recommendations (e.g., PowerPoint, Word)

People Development

  • Take a lead role in expanding and strengthening the team through recruiting, training, and community-building
  • Drive the upskilling of the Life Sciences team members on topics related to Data Strategy and Data Science in Life Sciences
  • Provide mentoring and coaching for junior team members to support continuous professional development
  • Responsible for assessing performance in consultation with the leadership team

Desired Skills and Experience

  • A consistent track record of 10+ years of Life Sciences expertise at an established management consulting and/or agency, brand marketing, or omnichannel team
  • Completed an advanced degree (or comparative experience) in data science, health economics, systems engineering, computer science, mathematics, statistics, or another analytical field of study
  • Experience leading teams of data scientists
  • Understanding of statistics, probability, and advanced analytics modeling
  • Experience developing/training and maintaining models in multiple genres of Advanced Analytics: machine learning, deep learning, optimization/prescriptive modeling, NLP/text analytics, cognitive/generative AI
  • Strong experience with Python and data manipulation tools including SQL, R, Pandas, NumPy, SciPy, Matplotlib, scikit-learn, Jupiter notebooks
  • Deep knowledge (7+ years) in the analysis of healthcare/life sciences data – specifically longitudinal claims/clinical data from one or more of the following: IQVIA (e.g., LAAD), Symphony Health (APLD), Merative/IBM MarketScan, Optum Health data.
  • Experience training and maintaining models using real world data
  • Comfortable in an environment with unstructured, incomplete, and ambiguous data
  • Strong analytical skills
  • Team player, able to integrate in an international and multidisciplinary team.
  • Strong skills in coaching/mentoring junior data scientists
  • Confident use with Office tools, in particular Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Ability to work independently and organize analytical tasks as a team lead.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-moving and constantly evolving high growth environment
  • Curious, open-minded, and driven to solve complex problems
  • Experience with Microsoft Power BI, Tableau, Qlikview/Qliksense, D3.js (or like packages) a plus
  • Experience in the pharmaceutical / life sciences industry

apgemini discloses salary range information in compliance with state and local pay transparency obligations. The disclosed range represents the lowest to highest salary we, in good faith, believe we would pay for this role at the time of this posting, although we may ultimately pay more or less than the disclosed range, and the range may be modified in the future. The disclosed range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including, but not limited to, geographic location, relevant education, qualifications, certifications, experience, skills, seniority, performance, sales or revenue-based metrics, and business or organizational needs. At Capgemini, it is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the top of the range for their role. The base salary range for the tagged location is $124,300 - $273,270. This role may be eligible for other compensation including variable compensation, bonus, or commission. Full time regular employees are eligible for paid time off, medical/dental/vision insurance, 401(k), and any other benefits to eligible employees. Note: No amount of pay is considered to be wages or compensation until such amount is earned, vested, and determinable. The amount and availability of any bonus, commission, or any other form of compensation that are allocable to a particular employee remains in the Company's sole discretion unless and until paid and may be modified at the Company’s sole discretion, consistent with the law.
