We have an opportunity to use data to empower Canadians to take control of their health by personalizing health journeys, predicting health outcomes, preventing disease progression, and generating insights and research in partnership with the Canadian health ecosystem.
As a core member of the Health Data Science team, reporting to Director, Health Data Science and Analytics, you will engage with Sun Life Health stakeholders to translate clinical and business goals and questions into analytical projects to generate health insights to drive population and individual health outcomes. Ideal candidate for this role brings has an entrepreneurial spirit to maximize the impact of our data and comes with a solid foundation in quantitative methods for predictive analytics (incl. statistics and machine learning) as applied to health, and experience in data engineering and establishing data pipelines for analytics.
The successful candidate will work in a fast-paced, dynamic, and fun environment with a focus on further maturing our health data and data science capabilities and developing and implementing our health analytics strategy and initiatives.
What will you do?
- Work with Sun Life Health product and solutions teams to understand the drivers of engagement and effectiveness of our digital health solutions to optimize their design
- Design, develop and operationalize reusable data pipelines and analytics products, in partnership with data engineers and product teams
- Leveraging data pipelines effectively to develop analyses and validation methodologies for generating insights and predictions
- Work in cross functional teams to generate clinical and behavioural insights, and deploy predictive AI/ML solutions.
- Scope, structure and lead analytics and data science projects balancing the business needs with data, technical and methodological constraints.
- Develop and implement health impact measurement and prediction approaches for Sun Life health to continuously drive improvements in and the optimal targeting of health solutions.
- Make recommendations with effective presentations of findings at multiple levels of stakeholders.
- Communicating plans, progress, results and recommendations for your projects
- Be an active contributing member to the analytics community to help foster and grow the data science capabilities at Sun Life
What will you need to succeed?
- M.S. or PhD in epidemiology, biostatistics, statistics, biomedical engineering, health services research, operations research, industrial engineering or related technical disciplines or equivalent experience
- 3+ years hands-on experience in developing and implementing analytics and data science solutions for insights using observational data , preferably with a focus on mobile/digital health solutions
- Comfortable working with clinical and business experts to map patient and provider journeys, clinical events and outcomes to observational data.
- Demonstrated expertise in statistical techniques to generate real world evidence, and ability to pragmatically select the right approach given the specific health question and data limitations.
- Proficiency in using industry standard programming and querying languages (i.e., SQL, Python) for data science workflows including data extraction, integration, model development, visualization and model deployment.
- Ability to break down broader data science development milestones into smaller goals, activities, and a work plan.
- Effective and concise oral and written storytelling and insights communication skills with demonstrated ability to tailor communications to clinical and business audiences.
- Ability to work on multiple projects in parallel while managing changing deadlines and priorities.
- Ability to document work and effectively prioritize documentation.
- Proven ability to collaborate with analysts, junior data scientists, data engineers, ML engineers and guide their work as needed.
- Past experience working with data generated from digital solutions (e.g. apps, web sites)
What will be nice to have?
- Experience with AWS services including SageMaker, glue, lambda
- Past experience in client-facing analytical roles
- Experience with Tableau

The Base Pay range is for the primary location for which the job is posted. It may vary depending on the work location of the successful candidate or other factors. In addition to Base Pay, eligible Sun Life employees participate in various incentive plans, payment under which is discretionary and subject to individual and company performance. Certain sales focused roles have sales incentive plans based on individual or group sales results.
