As a Data Scientist you will take on a high impact role acting as a critical thinker for Hiscox US. You will enjoy applying your core technical skills and innovative thinking to solve complex business problems and identify business opportunities through data-driven solutions. You will be able to operate in a wide variety of business functions across the US small business insurance domain and be able to handle multiple competing priorities. You will be expected to assist the business with evidence-based decisions and provide ad-hoc analysis as well as predictive and prescriptive models to build Hiscox data culture. You must be able to successfully operate in a fast-paced and rapidly changing environment and communicate business value derived from analytical solutions to key stakeholders. Additionally, you will own and lead the design, development, and deployment of advanced analytics projects using a variety of data sources, tools, and techniques as well as mentor and coach junior data scientists, and collaborate with business stakeholders, data engineers, and other data professionals.
This role is ideal for an individual passionate about using analytics to influence decisions. You will be expected to conceptualize new ways of doing things, communicate your vision simply and effectively to key stakeholders, and see these visions through to implementation.
Key Responsibilities:
- Work closely with senior leaders in understanding business strategy and assist in guiding and supporting strategic direction by providing compelling recommendations derived from advanced analytics, defining the scope, objectives and deliverables of data science projects in alignment with business needs and expectations
- Leverage industry standards, best practices, emerging methodologies, and empirical research to develop critical inputs to business information and help business leaders develop innovative approaches to drive their business.
- Work on end-to-end data solutions, including understanding complex business challenges, designing scientific solutions and frameworks, working large and small data sets (including 3rd party and internal data of a wide variety), and using cutting-edge machine learning or statistical modelling techniques to generate actionable insights and recommendations
- Build, train, and deploy machine learning models, ensuring they are robust, scalable, and reliable.
- Move models from development into production environments, monitoring and maintaining their performance.
- Lead the design and implementation of generative AI projects, including the development of Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG) or long context language models.
- Utilize clear and compelling visualizations and reports to facilitate communication of findings and recommendations to both technical and non-technical audiences
- Collaborate with the intelligent automation team, data scientists, data engineers, and other technical teams to support maturation of analytics practice within the organization
- Provide technical leadership and guidance to junior data scientists, and foster a culture of learning and innovation within the data organization
- Stay updated with the latest trends, technologies, and techniques in data science, and evaluate their applicability and feasibility for the US small business insurance domain
Person Specification:
- Bachelors Degree in a STEM or closely related field.
- At least 4-5 years + of relevant work experience in data science, experience in the insurance or financial services industry is a plus.
- Ability to conduct high quality research in a suitably timely manner working both independently and in small teams as required by the task.
- Experience in developing predictive and prescriptive analyses (predictive and statistical modeling, machine learning, statistical modelling, or data mining) to draw key business insights and articulate findings clearly for the target audience.
- Strong experience with analytical tools/programming languages, version control and databases (e.g., Python, R, SQL, GIT).
- Capable of bringing models from a research state into a production state consumable by non-technical users.
- Expertise in various data science methods and techniques, such as supervised and unsupervised learning, natural language processing, computer vision, deep learning, optimization, and simulation. Experience in generative AI is a plus.
- Proven experience in building, training, and deploying machine learning models.
- Experience in working with large and complex data sets, using cloud platforms, big data technologies, and data pipelines. Databricks experience is a plus.
- Strong collaboration, teamwork, and leadership skills, with the ability to work effectively in cross-functional and agile teams, as well as independently on analytics projects.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills and effective presentation and storytelling skills are essential, given the significant exposure to different internal stakeholders.

Salary Range - $130,000 - $170,000
