Position Overview

As an Intern in Autodesk Research's AI Lab, you'll apply advanced machine learning techniques to help our customers design and create a better, safer, more sustainable world. We are a team of researchers, engineers, and industry domain experts working on projects that range from learning-based design systems, computer vision, graphics, robotics, human-computer interaction, sustainability, simulation, manufacturing, architectural design and construction.

We are looking for an intern to work with us on machine learning research applied to design. We're passionate about making design tools to enable design exploration (getting to alternative design solutions), design automation (getting to the finished design faster), and sustainable design (with less negative impact). We hope to learn how our customers design today, to enable smarter software tomorrow.


Autodesk's AI Lab is active in the wider research community, targeting publications at NeurIPS, ICML, ICLR, and other top-tier conferences. We collaborate with top academic & industry labs, combining the best of an academic environment with product-driven research.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and execute a research agenda

  • Create and refine cutting-edge algorithms, drawing from multiple approaches in artificial intelligence

  • Collaborate with researchers and engineers across diverse disciplines, including communicating research plans, progress, and results

  • Shape the future of Autodesk's architecture, engineering, and construction products through published research and practical applications


Minimum Qualifications

  • Full-time student pursuing an MS or Ph.D. (preferred) in Computer Science, Computational Design, Artificial Intelligence, Applied Mathematics, Computational Statistics, Physics, Machine Learning or a related field in an accredited program with at least one academic term to complete post-internship

  • Broad understanding of machine learning and deep learning

  • Excellent Programming and software development skills, with experience in Python

  • Proficient with ML & DL platforms & libraries (PyTorch or TensorFlow)

  • Experience conducting research and publishing results

  • An excellent communicator and team player


Preferred Qualifications

  • Expertise in an area such as natural language processing, computer vision, 2D/3D geometry representation learning, reinforcement learning, graph neural networks, unsupervised/self-supervised learning, meta-learning, and/or generative models

  • Strong command of modern AI, including foundation models or multimodal models

  • Distinguished research achievements, such as intellectual property filings, awards, and leading authorship in top-tier venues (including but not limited to major ML/AI conferences, workshops, and journals)

  • Demonstrated programming experience through professional roles, internships, hackathons, or contributions to open-source repositories (e.g., GitHub)

  • Experience wrangling large, complex, high-dimensional data for large-scale training

  • Proven ability to tackle complex challenges independently


About the Autodesk Intern Program

The 2025 intern program, depending on location, runs for 12-16 weeks (May -- August). All internships are paid. As an intern, you will contribute to meaningful projects, be mentored by industry leaders, and participate in tech talks and other activities designed to support your personal and professional development. Our internships align with Autodesk's Flexible Workplace approach, which is designed to meet the needs of our business while providing flexibility in support of office, remote and hybrid work preferences.

Salary Transparency

Salary is one part of Autodesk's competitive compensation package. Offers are based on the candidate's experience, educational level, and geographic location, and can exceed this range.


For U.S.-based roles, we expect a starting annualized intern base salary to be between:

  • $47,840 and $95,680 (undergraduate students)
  • $72,800 and $118,500 (Masters/MBA students)
  • $118,560 and $162,240 (PhD students)
