Employment Information

The Italian Institute of Artificial Intelligence for Industry (AI4I) is a public research institute established in June 2024. It is dedicated to advancing cutting-edge research in Artificial Intelligence across science, technology, and industrial applications. Conceived as a strategic national infrastructure and supported by stable public funding, the Institute is based in a unique innovation hub in Turin. It is building an international research community with strong ties to academia, industry, and European institutions, while operating within the national AI Factory and leveraging the high-performance computing infrastructure provided by CINECA.

This call aims to appoint the founding Heads of AI4I’s R&D Labs, which form the backbone of the Institute’s scientific and technological architecture.

We welcome applications from researchers to head four new R&D Labs focused on frontier domains of AI research and their industrial applications:

  • Computer Vision for Industrial Environments
  • Generative AI and Foundation Models in Advanced Manufacturing
  • Agentic AI for Intelligent Decisions
  • AI for Cybersecurity

Our R&D Labs operate at the convergence of foundational research and real-world deployment, supporting long-term innovation across strategic sectors, public infrastructures, and critical industrial ecosystems. Research activities focus on developing visual perception algorithms for process monitoring, predictive maintenance, quality inspection, and seamless human-machine interaction across complex settings such as manufacturing and aerospace. By integrating advanced sensors, deep learning techniques, and multimodal models, the lab addresses a wide range of applications—from crew-uncrewed teaming in autonomous vehicles to smart factory solutions and collaborative robotics.
  • Generative AI and Foundation Models in Advanced Manufacturing – This lab explores the transformative potential of generative AI and foundation models in advanced manufacturing. The group designs and applies large language models and automated code generation systems to accelerate industrial software engineering, optimize development, testing, and maintenance processes, and reduce human error. Key focus areas include data-driven predictive maintenance, intelligent requirements analysis, automated documentation generation, proactive anomaly detection, and the customization of complex industrial workflows. Activities are closely aligned with real-world manufacturing needs, aiming to strengthen the digital competitiveness of the sector.
  • Agentic AI for Intelligent Decisions – This lab is focused on the development of agentic AI systems capable of autonomous and collaborative decision-making in dynamic industrial scenarios. Research topics include the design of intelligent agents that learn, reason, and act independently or as part of human-machine teams, enabling applications such as adaptive process optimization, autonomous mission planning, and multi-agent coordination. Emphasis is placed on explainability, robustness, and trustworthiness of AI-driven decisions, supporting new paradigms for high-autonomy systems in domains such as aerospace, logistics, and smart manufacturing, with broad applicability beyond the industrial sphere.
  • AI for Cybersecurity – This lab leverages state-of-the-art AI to address emerging cybersecurity challenges in industrial contexts. Research activities target the integration of machine learning for real-time threat detection, anomaly identification, automated response, and vulnerability assessment throughout the software and operational technology lifecycle. The lab focuses on building resilient AI-powered solutions for secure software development, intelligent monitoring, predictive risk analysis, and defense against sophisticated attacks. Emphasis is placed on aligning solutions with the unique requirements of industrial systems, enhancing both digital safety and operational continuity.
