Data Scientist II
The objective of the Data Scientist II is to identify, acquire, and analyze data for predictive and prescriptive data modelling using a variety of machine learning techniques. Reporting to the Manager of Decision Science, the incumbent will work as a part of a team in an agile framework to evaluate prospective use cases for feasibility, apply exploratory data analysis to craft possible solutions to business problems, create and promote baseline models to candidate model status, evaluate solutions for bias and/or adverse impact, define model metrics and set up monitoring, work with MLOps to productionize the solution, and document all aspects of model as required by governance. The incumbent is expected to think creatively, pursue innovation, and share knowledge. This position will seek to create extraordinary business value and support VyStar’s mission to deliver remarkable service and value to the membership.
ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES
- Conduct exploratory data analysis and feature engineering to develop predictive and prescriptive models using a variety of advanced statistical techniques that are best suited for the business problem. Identify model performance requirements through discussions with the business. Identify best model metrics and tune accordingly.
- Identify and suggest data sources and statistical and technical methods for the purposes of modeling and analysis in support of identified use cases.
- Work collaboratively within a team-oriented environment using agile methodology and related ceremonies.
- Conduct model experimentation based on experimental design and advance solution to candidate status and on through model acceptance and sign-off. Analyze model solutions for model risks, bias, and adverse impact.
- Collaborate with MLOps Engineer to productionize candidate model and perform requisite testing. Support model migration to point-of-consumption and conduct ongoing performance monitoring.
- Work with Data Model Governance Analyst to evaluate model for compliance and regulatory alignment, and document model according to Model Documentation Template.
- Effectively communicate complex ideas and solutions to business partners and non-technical stakeholders.
- Stay current on data science and machine learning techniques. Learn and share knowledge with the team.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
Required
- Bachelor's degree in Data Science, Statistics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Information Systems, Finance, Economics, Engineering, or other technology-related field or equivalent number of years of experience.
- 1-3 years of relevant enterprise project experience in successfully launching data science projects.
- 1-3 years of enterprise experience with various frameworks, libraries, and languages.
- 1-3 years of experience participating actively in agile development and product teams.
- 1-3 years of experience with experimental design and model experiment execution.
Preferred
- Experience in financial industry.
- Experience with roadmap development and use case impact analysis.
- Exposure to data science and process of developing predictive models and decision-support solutions through software tools such as Python, R, or PowerBI.
- Exposure to delivering solutions in an agile environment such as scrum.
- Exposure to Azure cloud environment and resources such as Azure Data Lake, Azure Machine Learning, MLFlow, DataBricks, and Azure Data Factory.
- Experience with Azure DevOps

- Knowledge of information management and cloud technologies.
- Understanding of core financial systems used in banking.
- Working knowledge of the credit union or banking industry.
- Understanding of the process of innovation and concept development.
- Understanding of model deployment into production.
- An uncanny sense of humor and a desire to go beyond ordinary.
