Employment Information

The Data Scientist is responsible for providing and interpreting information for collaborators, both in the Business units and R&D. Interacts predominantly with R&D and BU staff at Arkema research sites, as well as with Purchasing, international colleagues, and external vendors. Collaborates with colleagues in other geographies as appropriate for achieving specific project goals. Establishes knowledge of Arkema products and processes for the BUs that are supported and a general understanding of business interests and markets.

Key Activities

  • Provides data acquisition, data management, mining, statistical analysis, and optimization capabilities to support Arkema’s business units, manufacturing plants, R&D and potentially external customers
  • Collaborates with research scientists, process engineers and innovation leaders to apply advanced analytics and quantitative tools to data from R&D and manufacturing plants to solve problems, predict trends, optimize and improve processes, enhance safety, support innovation initiatives and set project strategy
  • Justifies and brings new data acquisition, analysis, modeling and optimization capabilities to the group
  • Organizes and leads projects and strategic initiatives with broad impact across the organization
  • Estimates project requirements, timing and delivers on project milestones
  • Writes technical reports and research proposals
  • Generates creative solutions for a variety of scientific and technology projects
  • Develop/manage databases and associated tools to support Arkema R&D initiatives
  • Establishes and maintains strong working relationships with R&D, Process Technology, plant and business personnel to facilitate technology transfer, identify new projects and promote data analytics
  • Builds and maintains extensive professional global network internally and externally with Arkema scientists and academic collaborators
  • Effectively represent the R&D Systems Research team at multiple levels within the company
  • Presents work at technical conferences and actively participate in professional organizations taking leadership roles as appropriate
  • Establishes general understanding of Arkema business priorities, commercial application interests, products and processes
  • Active participate in and support Arkema safety initiatives

Qualifications / Experience required

  • Ph.D. in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Mathematics, Statistics, Physics or related discipline -or- M.S. in Data, Library or Information Science, or equivalent experience
  • Strong mathematical and statistical background
  • Experience with data mining and information retrieval
  • Proficiency in analysis (e.g. R, SAS JMP, Minitab, Matlab) packages
  • Proficiency in programming languages (e.g. Python, Ruby, Java, Scala)
  • Experience with machine learning is desirable
  • Lean Six Sigma green belt certification desirable
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills with a track record of collaboration and teamwork
  • Self-starting ability with exceptional time and project management skills
  • Demonstrated ability to multitask, can lead and advance multiple projects in parallel
